LAKAS-KAMPI-CMD senatorial candidate Silvestre “Bebot” Bello III urged today President
Gloria Macapagal Arroyo to consider leaving the appointment of the next Supreme Court
Chief Justice to her successor.
This, according to Bello, a two-time justice secretary is to avoid the issue being
politicized. “My earlier position that PGMA has the constitutional right to appoint the
Chief Justice was sustained by the Supreme Court. But to avoid politicizing the issue on
appointment of the next Chief Justice, I think President Arroyo should consider leaving
the controversial appointment to her successor,” said Bello.
Bello, also a peace negotiator appealed to the opposition quarters not to bastardize the
Constitution by respecting the decisions of the Supreme Court, which he said, is part of
the democratic process that strengthens the foundation of a democratic society.
Bello stressed that the unfounded criticisms on Supreme Court justices over the decision
on the appointment of Chief Justice is not only a direct assault on the High Court but
also threatens the very fiber of our democratic system.
“It is the Supreme Court which is mandated to interpret the laws and clear the gray areas
in the Constitution, not the individual lawyers, not the politicians and certainly not
the other people who are not even lawyers,” he added.
Instead of harping on the SC decision, Bello said that the proper thing to do is to look
for new arguments and present them during the filing of the motion for reconsideration.
“In a matured democracy, you debate on the issue and not engage in personal attacks,”
said Bello.
“Politics is certainly the main factor here, and the sad part is that the Supreme Court,
the last bulwark of democracy, is unfairly being dragged into the issue,” said Bello
