Joey de Venecia III was born into a family of privilege and strong political persuasions. His father, Jose de Venecia Jr. is a powerful political figure serving as Speaker of the House of Representatives from 1992 to 1998 and from 2001 to 2008. The elder de Venecia is also a shrewd businessman with business interests that at one time spanned the globe. His mother, Victoria Perez is the daughter of Eugenio Perez who served as the last speaker of the Philippine Commonwealth and the first Speaker of the Philippine Republic from 1946 to 1953. Joey is the youngest child and the only boy in a brood of four. The marriage of his parents ended in divorce when he was very young.
Joey attended the Ateneo de Manila and La Salle Greenhills during his elementary years up to his second year in high school. He then left for the US attending boarding schools at the Northfield Mt. Hermon School in Massachusetts and the Portledge School in New York for his early education. He then studied Liberal Arts at Boston University and the Ateneo de Manila. He received his degree in B.S. Business Administration with a major in Accounting from the American University in Washington DC; and received his Masters in Business Administration from the Fordham University in New York with a major in Finance and as a full time scholar.
