  8. Kusog of Mindanao says:

    Philippine Daily Inquirer

DAVAO CITY, Philippines—Mindanao peace and human rights advocate Fr. Eliseo Mercado branded the senatorial bid of former Cabinet member Silvestre Bello III as “the realization of the long-time struggle of the people of Mindanao to have an equal opportunity to join the national elections.”

Mercado, convenor of Kusog Mindanaw, a civil society group in Mindanao, said leaders like Bello deserve the support of the people because of their strong advocacy for Mindanao’s development, peace and human rights issues.

“It has been a struggle and clamor of the Mindanawons to see people from (other areas) speaking on their behalf in the national government. Over the years, that did not happen,” said Mercado by phone.

“The advocacies of Bebot (Bello) have always been for the betterment of Mindanao,” said Mercado.

He said Kusog Mindanao will definitely support the candidacy of Bello.

The decision of Bello to run for the Senate, Mercado said, quenches Mindanao’s thirst to be well represented.

Created in 1994, Kusog Mindanaw is a multisectoral coalition that seeks to promote peace and development in Mindanao. Jeffrey M. Tupas, Inquirer Mindanao
